Landscaping Projects That Will Increase The Value Of Your Home

04-Jul-2019 | by Scott Bennett

Creating and caring for a beautiful yard in Salt Lake City can be done in stages and is truly rewarding. However, there are several questions you will need to consider to get the best results for your efforts and investment.

Which Grass Is Best?

The base of your choices for effecting landscaping in Salt Lake City has to be the turf. If your lawn is already sodded, how much water does it require? If your lawn is especially thirsty, you may have problems starting plants such as trees in the existing lawn. For example, if your grass requires daily watering and you want to plant a fruit or ornamental tree, the watering requirements of your lawn may actually drown a young tree. Whatever grass you decide on, make sure you know when is the best time to plant grass in Utah.

Consider hiring a residential landscaping service for a summer or two to help you water more effectively until the tree is established. The cooling and shade offered by the tree may actually lessen the amount of water your lawn takes!

Annuals or Perennials?

If you've just moved into your home and aren't certain which plants will look best in some locations, invest in annual flowering plants so you can test drive different colors and shapes in your gardens. Annual flowers will need extra water and a flowering fertilizer to help them get started, but once the plants are well rooted you can ease up on the watering.

Once you've decided on the size and shape of plants you need in your gardens, it's time to invest in perennials. While it may be tempting to load up on spring flowering plants on your visits to the gardening center, be sure to plant something that will be bright and cheerful during the hottest days. Perennials often grow larger than annuals, so be sure to put these at the back of foundation plantings or at the center of free-standing beds.

Make sure that your residential landscaping plan offers you privacy from inside your home without providing a hiding space for anyone lurking outside your home. Shaped hedges near the front door or under windows should be low growing and offer little in the way of a hiding space. Additionally, consider adding solar powered motion lights to these areas so you're aware of any activity near doors and windows. If you love the look of free form hedge plants, consider adding them at the property line away from the house if your neighbor agrees.

Putting together a great plan for landscaping in Salt Lake City calls for decisions on color, shape and watering needs. Working with a landscaping professional can help you make the best choices that will both brighten your home and provide you with a manageable landscape for years to come.
